Health Benefits of a Vegan Diet

Written by Nitesh Dhull | 14-Jul-2022 11:24:02 PM

Veganism is the practice of abstaining from eating animal products including meat, dairy, and eggs. It refuses to give animals, a commodity status. A vegan diet, when followed correctly, can be extremely nutrient-dense, lower one's chance of developing chronic diseases, and assist one in losing weight. Preliminary studies show that the diet can improve cardiovascular health; protect against cancer; and reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes.

There are a number of things, such as soaps and clothing, that are not suitable for vegans since they contain animal products, such as leather and animal fur. Some people choose this way of living as a sustainable diet because of the benefits it has on the environment.

Veganism vs Vegetarianism

Vegetarians and vegans abstain from eating animal products. However, Those who follow a vegan diet do not consume any animal products at all, including dairy, eggs, honey, or any other materials derived from animals, such as leather and silk. Vegetarianism can be further broken down into a variety of subcategories. Lacto-ovo-vegetarians consume both eggs and dairy products; ovo-vegetarians only consume eggs as an animal protein source; and lacto-vegetarians exclusively consume dairy products as an animal protein source. What about those that don’t eat either dairy or eggs? Actually, those people are vegans in the strictest sense of the word.

Veganism is on the rise and here are some top reasons to go vegan today.

  1. Research confirms humans don’t need animal products to live healthily

A well balanced vegan diet provides for all the nutrients required by the human body. It is a healthier option in comparison to the animal-based diet. American Dietic Association, states that “well-balanced vegan diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.” It also states that they are “appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, adolescence, and athletes.”

  2. A vegan diet can help you lose excess weight

A low-fat, low-glycemic-index vegan diet was compared to no dietary adjustments at all in a 2013 study. Compared to the control group, the vegan group had shed significantly more weight after 18 weeks. The fact that this is the case isn't all that shocking. The daily caloric intake of a vegan is typically lower than that of a meat-eating person.

This is due to the lesser intake of high-calorie items like butter, cheese, and meat in vegan and plant-based diets. Additionally, the fiber in these foods keeps you fuller for a longer period of time.

  3. Animals have emotions

The farm animals are as precious as cats and dogs. They feel affection, pleasure, joy as well as grief, fear, and pain. Like humans, they also form deep connections and emotional bonds. This causes them an equal amount of pain when separated. This is a big enough reason to go vegan.

  4. Animal agriculture adversely affects the World Hunger

This is because, to consume farm animals, we have to grow crops necessary to feed them. This raising of crops amounts to much more quantity in comparison to, if these would be grown directly to feed humans. The ‘livestock’ animals take more food from the global food supply than they provide.

  5. Animal Agriculture adversely affects Climate and Environment

Animal agriculture is the single greatest human-caused source of greenhouse gases, land use, and land degradation; the number one source of freshwater pollution, and the leading driver of rainforest destruction. It is also a major cause of air pollution, habitat loss, and species extinction, and is a highly inefficient use of limited natural resources. According to The Los Angeles Times, a hamburger requires 660 gallons of water. There’s a lot of water wastage done in growing and processing the meat.

  6. Vegan Diet keeps your Heart Healthier

One of the single most cause contributing to heart diseases is excess dietary Cholesterol. Our bodies make all the cholesterol we need, so consuming animal products contribute to excessive levels. The liver produces more cholesterol due to the saturated fats present in animal meat.

  7. Meat is not made for Humans

According to the physical attributes, humans have long intestines to digest the plant-based foods that take longer to digest whereas carnivore animals have short intestines as animal digestion is not a very long process. By eating animals, we are disturbing the food chain. Carnivores have all the opposite physical attributes.
